Despite the difficulties and the costs of sending art
into space, artists are not waiting. At the moment there are
a number space art projects that
could be realized in the next few years.

2003. For the past several years, French artist Jean-Marc
Philippe has been developing the KEO
Project - a time capsule that is designed to orbit
the Earth for 50,000 years. The launch was planned for 2003 and
is still pending.
Russian artist Radik Kagirov is
soliciting support for a project which will create orbital constellations
or visual effects in the sky.
Richard Clar has proposed several projects which
have been under development for a number of years. "Earth
Star" (Clar,1997) consists of a ceramic artwork to be created
in space that would utilize the transforming process of heat generated
during re-entry. "Alma da Agua" (Clar – Ribeiro,
2002) is a project which combines samples of water from all of
the eight Portuguese-speaking countries. The individual water samples
are to be carried into space aboard a Brazilian sounding rocket
(Sonda III) where they will be combined in weightlessness and then
recorded on video.
This year the European Space Agency launched a
study proposal to seek ideas for the “Cultural Utilization
of the International Space Station” (AO/1-4512/03/NL/EC).
A number of organizations submitted bids in February 2004 and the
selection of the study manager should take place before the summer.
The OURS Foundation, Leonardo/Olats, ESA
and the International Academy of Astronautics (Commission VI) are organizing
a four day
workshop called “Space: Science, Technology and the Arts” which
will be held at ESA research center ESTEC in Noordwijk, NL on May
18-21, 2004. Here we expect to see a number of new art projects
for space launched into the public domain.
