[ Introduction ] [ A
Brief History of Space Art ]
Cyberspace and Outer Space are natural environments
for the space artist. Both require an understanding and appreciation
of computers and technological innovation.
For the past forty years
the exploration of space has been synonymous with our species'
highest expressions of technology. Today the world is getting "wired" and "cyberspace" has
rapidly become the new frontier for all forms of multimedia expression.
With our skills, experience and our unique message, space artists
have an incredible opportunity to really set themselves apart from
crowd in this exciting and ever growing new territory.
It is a goal of ars astronautica to become both a forum and a platform
for the space arts. Actively participating and supporting this
web project will enable all those interested to achieve a larger
visibility on the Internet as well among the general public throughout
the world. This, in turn, will spread our message and heighten
general awareness of our art as well the importance of space exploration
and development to the future of our species.
It is within the possibilities of this web site to initiate various
activities that further the space arts in the general public and
among ourselves. These include establishing a marketplace for space
art, a forum for the discussion of the issues related to space
and its cultural aspects, setting up a "Listserver" for
interactive discussion on a variety of space and art related topics,
and working on exhibitions and art projects on Earth and, yes,
in space.
To this extent ars astronautica plans to offer inexpensive web
space to space artists, will regularly publish a Spaceart Newsletter,
a commercial Space Art Gallery and maintain an interactive forum
for its associates. We are already involved in a project called "SPACEARTS
the Space Art Database" to document the vastness of space
art These aspects are really only the beginning of what is possible.
We are convinced that a greater visibility for the arts in and
about space can be achieved through ars astronautica. The result
should be broader interest in space and the arts in general and
hopefully a more interest in the works of the artists who are represented
here. However, this can only happen by working together.
